From whichever platform your participating in worship today, let us know in the comments that you're here. Say hi! As you are a part of our online worship, it is a recording of our previous week's in person worship service. We do that so that we can share in a higher quality of worship together. Even though the service is recorded, Pastor John is down in the comments of the service every weekend. What comes next follows the same order of service that is used during in person worship. Prelude-Whom Shall I Fear To start today, will you say this prayer with me Come Holy Spirit, come show us how we can be the spiritual heart of this community I'm glad to be worshiping with you today! And Happy Father's Day! The Commandments aren't restrictive, but they do require us to change how we see the world. Which is why in the first command God frees us to focus on one God which opens the world for us. People: To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God. Leader: What does God command of us? People: To love God with all our heart, and all our soul, and all our mind, and all our strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Leader: God does not call us to ease or to comfort. People: But to presence, and abundance, and grace in our struggle. Leader: Let us worship the God who believes in us, and trusts in us, and abides with us. People: Let us worship the God who will ask much of us, but will be beside us every step of the way. ~ written by Eliza Buchakjian-Tweedy, Pastor at First Church Congregational, Rochester, NH. She blogs at http://sermonizing.wordpress.com/ Opening Prayer Holy God, we come together to worship, a people who would like to think that we love you with all our hearts and souls, with all our might, but there are so many other things in our lives that clamor for our attention that we often relegate you to Sundays and Wednesdays, and times when we want you to rescue us. Most of us really do want you to be the one in whom we live and move and have our being. We really do want to hear your voice above all of the other voices in our lives. But we get bogged down in the daily routine. We forget who we are. We forget who you are. We forget what the church is supposed to be. So here we are, standing before you today, with our human foibles and our short attention spans, asking that you would make yourself known to us, that you would help us to recognize the presence of the Holy, that you would continue to challenge us, inspire us, and make us into the people you want us to be. Amen. ~ written by Katie Cook, in Sacred Seasons, Pentecost/Ordinary Time 2000. This could be the time when you go online, or you write a check to the church, or when you make that commitment to give in a different way. After the personal prayer, I'll say a prayer (if you're watching the video), and then join in saying the Lord's Prayer below. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen Scripture Reading Our scripture reading for worship is Exodus 32:1-10 As you are able, please stand for the reading of God's Word. 1The people saw that Moses was taking a long time to come down from the mountain. They gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come on! Make us gods who can lead us. As for this man Moses who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t have a clue what has happened to him.” 2Aaron said to them, “All right, take out the gold rings from the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3So all the people took out the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4He collected them and tied them up in a cloth. Then he made a metal image of a bull calf, and the people declared, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf. Then Aaron announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the LORD!” 6They got up early the next day and offered up entirely burned offerings and brought well-being sacrifices. The people sat down to eat and drink and then got up to celebrate. 7The LORD spoke to Moses: “Hurry up and go down! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, are ruining everything! 8They’ve already abandoned the path that I commanded. They have made a metal bull calf for themselves. They’ve bowed down to it and offered sacrifices to it and declared, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’” 9The LORD said to Moses, “I’ve been watching these people, and I’ve seen how stubborn they are. 10Now leave me alone! Let my fury burn and devour them. Then I’ll make a great nation out of you.” Leader: This is the word of God, for the people of God People: Thanks be to God! Freely, Freely--UMH 389 Today's Message: It Will Hurt Something The Commandments aren't restrictive, but they do require us to change how we see the world. Which is why in the first command God frees us to focus on one God which opens the world for us. Trust and Obey--UMH 467 Benediction Hear this: the Lord our God is the one and only Lord. Therefore go out into the world and love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love others as you love yourself. And may God give you justice and freedom; May Christ Jesus set you free for love; and may the Holy Spirit go where you go and protect you on your way. ~ Adapted from Nathan Nettleton LaughingBird.net Copyright © 2000 Postlude-Wake Up Sleeper
